What is Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Palm Sweating)?

Hyperhidrosis means excessive sweating. People with hyperhidrosis produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature. It is thought that about 0.5% of the population (or about one person in 200) has some form of hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis can affect the armpits, hands, feet or face but armpits are the most common issue.

Most patients say that their excessive sweating is triggered more by social situations and stress than temperature.

Botulinum Toxin Injections

The most effective treatment for excessive palm sweating is injection of botulinum toxin (Botox) into the skin of the palm. Most patients ask for one hand to be treated – usually because they want a dry handshake!

As the palm is too sensitive to tolerate injections, an anaesthetic is injected into the wrist which makes the palm completely numb.

A number of tiny injections are made around the sweat producing area on one or both palms and fingers. They are not very painful and the marks settle within a few minutes. The effect comes on after 3-5 days as the sweat glands drastically reduce the amount of sweat they produce. The effect generally lasts 4-6 months.
