Cheek Enhancement

As we age our cheek definition is one of the features that we lose. A young face has prominent ‘apples’ in the mid-face and defined cheek bones running back from the ‘apples’ towards the ear.

Volume is lost with age and those ‘apples’ soon disappear leaving a flat or even sunken mid-face area. The definition of the cheek bone is lost and this becomes a clear sign of aging.

As the volume of tissue under the skin is lost, the skin size stays the same - the result being too much facial skin that no longer ‘fits’ the volume depleted face. This leaves us with ‘extra’ skin which inevitably will fold and crease like any material. Gravity pulls this extra skin downward so some of the effects of cheek volume loss include jowls, deep naso-labial (nose to mouth) folds and a downturned mouth.

Cheek enhancement involves the placement of a special filler material - either SubQ or Voluma – deep under the skin in the area of volume loss. The filler material is a non-animal (synthetic) hyaluronic acid gel so as not to cause any reaction, and is non-permanent. The gel is moulded into place and can be used to restore those ‘apples’, give definition to the cheekbone and replace the lost volume in the mid face. As a result of this replacement, the skin now ‘fits’ the face better to there is often the added benefit of reduction in the lines and laxity of the facial skin, lifting the mouth, jowls and naso-labial folds.

The gel is injected under local anaesthetic for maximum comfort. The effect can be seen immediately and there can be some local swelling for a couple of days. Occasionally there can be some bruising which will resolve on its own.

The cheeks can in some cases ache for a couple of days after the treatment and we will give you pain killers if needed.

The effect usually lasts 9 – 12 months and in our patients often longer.
